Even with the graduation of the 2009-10 class, things are really busy as we anticipate the applications for the class of 2010-11 and the summer picnic scheduled for July 14.
To be sure that we have the resources to support our incoming class and our continuing education program planned for November, we were fortunate to be able to honor US House Republican Leader John Boehner at our annual fundraising luncheon on June 4th. Over 170 supporters, including many Institute members, joined us at this very successful event. Congressman Boehner’s remarks were right on target about having “the wind behind our backs” in the approaching 2010 general election and everyone left the luncheon excited and energized.
In addition to Leader Boehner’s comments, one of the most impressive parts of the luncheon was when our chairman, Betty Montgomery, invited all of the Institute members attending to stand. As I looked across the room it was a thrill to see so many of you and have the visual affirmation of the results of our first ten years offering leadership training to Republican women in Ohio!
Each week brings more news about recognitions received by Institute members in their community and political activities, as well as in their professional careers. We want to share that good news in the newsletter so please keep up the calls, e-mails and letters to share the information.
We have enjoyed an incredible year thus far - with your help.
We had a busy and productive Washington D. C. trip, where, among meetings, evening tours of the Capitol, and receptions, we had a surprise visit from House Republican Leader John Boehner at our graduation dinner. What a wonderful recognition of this Institute and its members!
We followed this busy May with an enormously successful fundraiser, keynoted by Leader Boehner.
Members continue to participate and be recognized for their leadership in the party — evidenced by Chris Schmenk's (Class of 2007) receiving The 2010 Jo Ann Davidson Leadership Award (an annual award honoring a Republican woman who has achieved notable accomplishments, demonstrated outstanding political leadership and advanced the interests of women on behalf of the Ohio Republican Party) at the second annual state GOP dinner last Saturday. This is the second time the award was given and both recipients are JADOLI graduates! The other recipient was Nicole Beckwith (Class of 2010).
This year has demonstrated how State GOP Chairman Kevin DeWine has been very supportive of the Institute and its goals, and this support has translated into more recognition and positions of responsibility within the party.
Finally, we begin the process of selecting our next class.
YOU will determine if the next 10 years will be good ones for the Institute, the party, and our candidates. We need YOU to help recruit good candidates for the Institute. The deadline for applications is June 30. Help us help the party, our candidates, and women across the state realize their full potential.

Julie Stautberg (2003 Class) - May 2010
On May 19th The Institute lost a Member, the Honorable Judge Julie Stautberg. Julie was an incredible woman who set her goals high and worked hard each day to achieve them. On April 30th of this year, the Judge was sworn in as President of the Cincinnati Bar Association and was named a YWCA of Cincinnati Career Woman of Achievement honoree. Even while these accolades were being announced, Julie was continuing her courageous struggle with cancer treatments.
Julie became an Institute Member in 2003. She later sought and became an Anderson Park District Commissioner…in fact she became President of the Commission. During her brief life, this energetic and visionary woman was the Director of the Hamilton County Board of Elections before her election as Municipal Court Judge in 2004.
In Judge Stautberg’s own words, “Whether it’s at work or on boards I’m involved in, I welcome the opportunity to mentor young lawyers and to mentor new board members to reach their full potential.”
This past year, Julie was aware that her illness was not responding to treatment. Even so, she told her friends that one of her two goals this year was to attend the JADOLI Anniversary Celebration. A woman of determination, Julie made it to the continuing education portion of the meeting, but was too weak to attend the dinner that evening.
Julie will be missed by many people she listened to and touched along the way. Her legacy of mentoring younger women and men and her support of The Institute will always be remembered. View article.

Beau Euton (2005 Class), Chris Schmenk (2007 Class), Valoria Hoover (2008 Class) and Kathy Eshelman (2004 Class).
The following is a quote from Chairman Kevin DeWine as he presented the award.
"Our first award is presented in honor of our Republican National Committeewoman, the former co-chair of the RNC and former Speaker of the Ohio House, Jo Ann Davidson. It is being presented to a Republican woman who has achieved notable accomplishments, demonstrated outstanding political leadership and advanced the interests of women on behalf of the Ohio Republican Party.
Our recipient tonight is a wife, a mother, a small business owner, a corporate executive and an elected official. When she is not managing the government and community affairs of a multi-billion dollar company, she is likely managing sewer, sanitation and safety issues for the residents of her hometown.
In her spare time, she serves on the boards of her local YMCA, public library, chamber of commerce, and hospital. She also helps to mentor other Republican women in politics through the Jo Ann Davidson Leadership Institute.
She is one of our party’s most energetic and tireless leaders, and a role model for anyone who wonders how to balance the demands of family, work, community and public service. Ladies and gentlemen, please help me welcome the director of government and community affairs for Scotts Miracle Gro Company, the mayor of Marysville, Ohio, and the recipient of the 2010 Jo Ann Davidson Leadership Award, from Union County, Chris Schmenk."
